这是六書的転注。
六書,指漢字的六種構造条例。

(転注)
慎曰:転注者,建類一首,同意相受,考、老是也。此条今人所不解。
蓋諸夏方千里,東西南北語音殊異,一義有多字,用於異域也。

Japanese vocabulary has been heavily influenced by loanwords from other languages.
A vast number of words were borrowed from Chinese over a period of at least 1,500 years.

The Japanese language is written with a combination of three different types of scripts:
modified Chinese characters called kanji (漢字 = 古中国語), and two syllabic scripts made up of modified Chinese characters, hiragana (ひらがな or 平仮名) and katakana (カタカナ or 片仮名).

So japanese characters have multiple pronunciations.
Children have to learn these multiple pronunciations in Japan.

But a character has only one pronunciation in Chinese Language.
It is easy for children to learn it in China.
(only 3000 pronunciations, but difficult for me. lol)

I think that "还 - hai or huan" is one of exceptions.
